Our annual waterball competition held at the Big Flats Community Park during the Big Flats Community Days in June. The Golden Glow Junior Firefighters team came up and practiced with us at our station to better prepare us for competition. They ended up taking third place…..we, however, are hoping for better luck next year.

On March 1st, 2006, at approximately 12:05 pm, New York State Trooper Andrew J. Sperr encountered a suspicious vehicle at a small deserted pull off on Lowe Road in Big Flats. Unbeknownst to him, the two male occupants of the vehicle had just robbed the Chemung Canal bank in Big Flats. The men had left a different vehicle at the site prior to the robbery and were there to switch vehicles when they were noticed by Trooper Sperr. As he attempted to approach the vehicle, the passenger opened fire on him. Trooper Sperr was immediately struck twice by gun fire, but despite his wounds, he drew his sidearm and returned fire. During the gun battle, Trooper Sperr managed to hit both suspects. Trooper Sperr received two additional gunshot wounds before the suspects fled the scene. Trooper Sperr succumbed to his wounds at the site on Lowe Road. Because of the serious wounds sustained in the gun battle with the Trooper, both suspects were forced to seek medical attention and were thereby quickly apprehended.

The New York State Police established a command post at the Big Flats Fire Department and spent over thirty hours working from our station. We were honored to serve the New York State Police throughout their investigation and apprehension of these criminals.

Thousands of mourners turned out in Rochester for the funeral of Trooper Sperr to pay their respects to this fallen hero and his family.

On September 9th, 2006 a ceremony was held to honor Trooper Sperr and the new memorial park at Kahler Road was dedicated in his honor. The road that travels on the North side of the park was renamed as Trooper A.J. Sperr Drive.
